Garcia demonstrates through more than a thousand step-by-step photographs and descriptive narrative his vast arsenal of attacks. Whether you grapple as a hobby or you're preparing for competition, Advanced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Techniques is for you. This is that rarest of things: a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu book that gives a clear picture of a single champion's game from its start on the feet, through core elements like arm drags and guard passes, to the finishes that Garcia consistently uses.
The photographs throughout are clear and easy to follow, while the text adds to them rather than just captioning them. There are only a couple of small points that stop me giving this five stars.

The photographs throughout are clear and easy to follow, while the text adds to them rather than just captioning them. There are only a couple of small points that stop me giving this five stars. One is that the book doesn't make it clear that this is actually just a guide to MG's top game. There is a separate book on his bottom game, but I was half hoping for a couple of bottom game updates to his x-guard book in light of what appears to be his adoption of the single leg x-guard as a major stepping stone in his approach.
The other one is a minor niggle, which is over the 'helpful hints' box-outs. Their only hint seems to be that you should join MG's online community for more, which gets irritating after the first half dozen times.
We've developed a structured program especially for our BJJ fundamentals class. This class is for beginners, and we teach from a clearly defined curriculum. This class isn't a straight shot to belt promotion, but it should be viewed as a 'minimum requirement '.
It's usually a bit smaller, so there are lots of opportunity for one on one interaction from the instructor. There is no full contact sparing or 'rolling' as its called in Jiu Jitsu, in this class. It's just technique and lots of it. This class is a perfect low pressure and light paced environment. In our advanced BJJ class, you'll definitely get a workout! This class is split up into 3 different sections. It the first 1/3, you'll do a lot of moving!
We do a quick warm up, followed by a good stretch, then we get right into mobility drills. These drills are designed to mimic certain movements in BJJ, but you can do them without the resistance of a partner to perfect the movement. It's a lot of fun, and a lot of hard work! Information is the name of the game in the second segment of class. This is the time when the instructor will demonstrate a particular technique, or a set of techniques and explain them.
After its explained, you'll pair up and try it on someone and they'll try it on you! The instructor is available at all times to answer questions and correct mistakes. Drillers are killers, so please take full advantage of this time during class! (Or as it's known in BJJ, rolling.) the 3rd and last portion of class is reserved for live sparring. This is the time when you get to put the new info you just gained to the test against an unwilling and resisting opponent. Because there are no strikes in BJJ, it can be practiced at full speed with very little risk of injury.
